The Path to Freedom

In the framework of the project “Freedom Messengers Network” that was implemented by the United Group with the support of Rady School of Management, University of California, USA, in cooperation with Center for Defending Freedom of Journalists (Jordanian partner) and Media for Training Association (Lebanon partner).The partners conducted three trainings to educate young artists about liberalism, democracy and human rights. These trainings used a training manual composed of seven papers.

These papers include a bunch of carefully selected topics to meet the societal needs in Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon. Those topics were selected after discussions and consultations to come up with the most urgent and important issues for the Arab world and the best way to address them, given the diverse nature of the targeted trainees in the three countries.
These papers were prepared by Al Ahram Center for Publication, Translation and Distribution under the supervision of Dr. Wahid Abdel Meguid (Director-General of Al Ahram Center for Publication, Translation and Distribution).

The first paper: “Liberalism and Globalization,” by Dr. Refaat Lakusha. It is divided into four chapters; the first chapter tackles the emergence of liberalism and its social roots, while the second chapter explains how it led to globalization. The third chapter tries to distinguish between social liberalism and neo-liberalism and their relationship with globalization and universalism. The fourth chapter puts a future vision for how the Arab world can benefit from globalization.

The second paper: “Human Rights and the Arab Culture,” by Mr. Mustafa Bauomy. The paper is divided into four chapters. The first chapter discusses the emergence and evolution of the concept of human rights according to the international documents. The second chapter discusses the issue of women between human rights and the Arab culture. While the third chapter tackles the nature of the relationship between the Arab culture and human rights. the forth chapter tackles two intellectual and literary testimonials that are separated by more than 75 years.

The third paper: “The Role of Education in Building Democracy,” by Mr. Karam Saied. This paper aims to tackle the bilateral and mutual relationship between Education and Democracy. On the one hand, there is no way democracy can be achieved without having a proper educational system; on the other hand, it is inevitable to live in a democratic society in order to develop any educational system. The paper is divided into five main aspects: the importance of Education and problems facing it in Egypt and the Arab World, the role of Education in augmenting or hindering the culture of democracy, the role of schools in building a democratic society, how to develop an educational system that supports the democratic structure, and a review of “Pedagogy of the Oppressed” by Paulo Freire.

The fourth paper: “The Freedom of Expression, Creation and Belief,” by Dr. Wahid Abd Al-Maguid and Mr. Bashir Abd Al-Fattah. This paper tries to to highlight the issues of freedom of expression, creation and belief in the Arab world, as they became of great importance since the beginning of the last century.

The fifth paper: “Citizenship,” by Mr. Ahmad Abd Al-Hafeez. The paper tackles the idea of citizenship in two parts. Te first part is dedicated to examining the concept of citizenship and the related concepts, its evolution and its relationship with democracy and human rights. The second part tackles the situation of citizenship in the Arab world, while focusing on Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan as models.

The sixth paper: “Civil Society,” by Mr. Ayman Abd Al-Wahab. This paper tackles the characteristics and dilemmas facing civil society, and the relationship between the latter and the state in the Arab world.

The seventh paper: “The Final Evaluation Report of the Training Workshops and Photos Documenting the Training,” by Mr. Negad El-Borai, the advisor of the training. The paper provides a general evaluation of the three trainings that were conducted in the framework of the “Freedom Messengers Network” project in Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon.
