Dated Monday, 11 January 2009, the United Group organized a seminar to discuss the annual report of the Public Funds Protection Unit at the United Group. The report is entitled "Under the Microscope: Public Funds Abuse November 2008 - November 2009."
The seminar falls in the scope of the "Community Action towards Transparency" project, implemented by the United Group with the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This project aims to strengthen the role of civil society associations and members of local councils in supporting transparency.
The seminar was chaired by Dr. Ali Al-Salmi, the former Minister of Administrative Development. It included three main axes, the first axis monitored public funds abuse incidents according to the files of the Public Funds Protection Unit, formulated by the United Group to defend public funds public funds abuse, and the incidents discussed in the seminars held by partner NGOs in nine governorates, both Messrs. Essam Sultan and Sayed Saaban, attorneys-at-law, commented on this axis.
The second axis discussed the way in which different Egyptian newspapers tackled public funds abuse incidents, both Messrs. Usama Al-Ghazouly and Dr. Ammar Ali Hassan, journalists, commented on this axis. The last axis tackled the role played by the Egyptian parliament in protecting public funds, through the careful analysis of the People's Assembly minutes of meetings during the period covered by the report, Dr. Amr Hesham Rabia, Vice-Chairman of Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies, commented on this axis. The seminar was attended by about 80 people, including representatives of civil society associations, members of Shura Council and People's Assembly, representatives of foreign organizations, a number of journalists, media and lawyers, as well as representatives/ heads of various political parties and a number of counselors and judges.
