As part of the project "Empowering Civil Society and the Legal Profession", the United Group organized a discussion meeting on April 30, 2009 for the civil society associations that signed protocols of cooperation within the Alexandria governorate. The meeting aimed at identifying the most important obstacles facing these associations in terms of conducting their activities. The meeting was attended by sixty individuals, representing fourty-five associations at the National Foundation for Family and Community Development.
The regional union of NGOs in Alexandria was represented by Messrs. Hassan Abaza, Head of the Union, and Mr. Ahmed Shalash, who responded to queries by the associations. The United Group was represented by Messrs. Ehab Sallam (Project Manager) and Ehab Rady (Assistant Project Manager).
The associations inquired about a number of topics, mainly: • The arbitrariness of the administrative entities with the associations • The extent of the governor's authority to dissolve associations, without real protection (which is a threat against the associations of Alexandria) • The associations' need for training on grant management and applying for grants • A particular problem about a vehicle purchased by one of the associations, and which license was cancelled by the governor • The subject of pilgrimage subject (Hajj and Umrah) of associations

The orientation training, attended by 28 attorneys from Alexandria and Behiera, held on April 30, 2009 at The National Institute - Alexandria discussed the preparation of attorneys for any legal problems that could face NGOs.
Mr. Ahmed Mohsen covered the legal aspect of the training, which discusses the legal issues facing NGOs after their establishment, Judicial and administrative appeal methods and the role of conflict resolution committees.
Dr. Hosny Younes - Head of the regional union of NGOs in Behiera, discussed the administrative instructions, periodic administrative publications, practical realities of NGO activities and the most adequate techniques to deal with the administration.
The training included practical training on actual cases, where the trainees prepared the defense statement and the legally required procedures.

Upon an invitation from "Alexandria Today and Tomorrow" Association, Mr. Negad El-Borai (Attorney-at-Law and Human Rights Activist) participated in an open discussion session with a number of young journalists from Alexandria and Beheira, as part of the project "Future Media Practitioners" implemented by the host association with the support of the United States Agency for International Development. The project aims at raising the efficiency of young media workers and media students at Egyptian Universities.
