Human Rights Information & Training Center HRITC organizes a seminar on the status of human rights movement (status and current challenges).

It is scheduled that the seminar will be held on Thursday 11th June 2009 at the center hall in Taiz , (09:00 am). Mr. Najad Alboraie, the human rights expert and the United Group head in Egypt will present a working paper on the constraints and challenges that human rights movement in the Arab world faces.

A number of academicians, representatives of civil society organizations and media will participate in the discussion.

It is worth mentioning that this seminar comes within the framework of the Monthly Dialogue Forum, which is implemented by HRITC that discuses human rights issues from different angles.

The United Group (Attorneys-at-Law, Legal Advisors and Human Rights Advocates) organized a seminar on the report "Abusing the Law"- Evaluating the application of the Administration of the Law of Associations No. 84/2002. The seminar constituted of two consecutive sessions, and was attended by 60 participants, mainly lawyers, judges, and Professors of Law and Economy, as well as heads of eleven regional unions of associations and representatives of numerous NGOs from across Egypt.

The seminar discussed whether associations' funds are public or private, as well as the role of the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) in monitoring the accounts of NGOs in light of the instructions of the Governor of the CBE to banks not to issue any payments on behalf of civil society associations without obtaining a signed and stamped approval by the Ministry of Social Solidarity. The seminar comes in the context of the project Empowering Civil Society and the Legal Profession, which is implemented by the United Group in cooperation with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

As part of the project "Empowering Civil Society and the Legal Profession", the United Group organized a discussion meeting on April 30, 2009 for the civil society associations that signed protocols of cooperation within the Alexandria governorate. The meeting aimed at identifying the most important obstacles facing these associations in terms of conducting their activities. The meeting was attended by sixty individuals, representing fourty-five associations at the National Foundation for Family and Community Development.

The regional union of NGOs in Alexandria was represented by Messrs. Hassan Abaza, Head of the Union, and Mr. Ahmed Shalash, who responded to queries by the associations. The United Group was represented by Messrs. Ehab Sallam (Project Manager) and Ehab Rady (Assistant Project Manager).

The associations inquired about a number of topics, mainly:
• The arbitrariness of the administrative entities with the associations
• The extent of the governor's authority to dissolve associations, without real protection (which is a threat against the associations of Alexandria)
• The associations' need for training on grant management and applying for grants
• A particular problem about a vehicle purchased by one of the associations, and which license was cancelled by the governor
• The subject of pilgrimage subject (Hajj and Umrah) of associations
